We don’t breed often — but we enjoy sharing everything we’ve learned.
Our goal is to raise the standard of Oodle breeding by educating buyers and supporting ethical breeders.
At Raggy Dogs, we rarely have puppies available ourselves — and that’s intentional as raising puppies is a huge commitment. Breeding requires careful planning of the genetics, DNA testing, hip scoring, caring for, training and nourishing the mother and the father of the puppies before, during and after pregnancy. Raising a litter of puppies and providing lifetime support to the new owners of the puppies.
We’re committed to ethical, low-volume breeding where the health and wellbeing of our dogs always come first. Rather than breeding frequently, we focus on sharing our hands-on experience raising well-adjusted, confident puppies to educate both puppy buyers and aspiring breeders.
Through our guides, videos, and resources, we aim to help you understand what ethical breeding looks like, what to ask when choosing a puppy, and how the early weeks of a puppy’s life shape their long-term behaviour and health.
The nature and nurture of ethical dog breeding
Environment - The family home
We are passionate advocates of breeders who raise their puppies in the family home. Puppies that experience the sounds of a family home in their formative first weeks of life, have a head start on socialisation.
We consider our puppies to be part of our family. When one of our puppies joins your family, our family’s loving influence on their first 8 weeks of life endures. Our puppies are played with, cuddled and filled with love.
By the time they go to their new homes at 8 weeks of age, they are secure and confident, due to our puppy-raising program and the socialisation inherent in our family-led approach.
Exposing puppies to common household sounds such as the television, vacuum cleaner, children playing (and having tantrums), clanging pots and pans, music etc makes their transition to their new homes far easier for the puppy and their new owners.
Our puppy-raising program, increases resilience and optimism, reducing the likelihood of our puppies developing behaviour problems as adults.

Puppy raising program - ENS and ESI
Ethical breeders implement an ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) and ESI (Early Scent Introduction) program as part of their puppy-raising program. An Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) program consists of applying gentle stressors to young pups in a controlled manner through specific handling exercises.

Based on years of research, it has been found that the programme had lasting effects and led to rapid neurological growth and development in puppies.
Benefits of ENS and ESI:
- Improved heart rate and heart beats
- Stronger adrenal glands
- Improved stress tolerance
- Increased resistance to diseases
Furthermore, the pups that received this stimulation were healthier, had better cardiovascular and adrenal health, and were generally better at problem-solving than puppies that did not receive this stimulation during the crucial developmental phase.
Puppy socialisation | Cultivating loving and positive sensory experiences
From 3-12 weeks of age is a puppy’s critical socialisation period. Experienced dog breeders understand the importance of puppy socialisation during the formative first 8 weeks of a pup’s life.
Puppies benefit from positive exposure to sensory stimulation such as:
- Car rides.
- The sound of fireworks, thunder, babies crying, traffic, construction, planes, lawnmowers, music, crowds, excited children and vacuum cleaners.
- The sensation of uneven and slippery surfaces against their paws. In our puppy play gym we have ball pits, see-saws, wobble boards, slippery surfaces, soft spiky fitness equipment, A-frame, dog walk etc.
- Visual stimulation such as umbrellas opening unexpectedly nearby.
- Positive interactions with adult dogs.
- Positive interactions with other animals such as cats, chooks, rabbits, and guinea pigs.
New experiences are paired with tasty treats, calm words of encouragement, pats and play to reassure puppies that they are safe.
From the time puppies are born to a few days old, they benefit from daily handling.
It is our experience that puppies who are cuddled, played with and engaged with extensively during their first 8 weeks of life, are highly human-oriented.
Feeding puppies nourishing human-grade proteins and vegetables
We are passionate about dog nutrition and through our research and puppy raising experience we have discovered that the best dog food for Oodles contains:
- A range of human-grade meat proteins including lamb, beef, chicken, fish, pork and kangaroo.
- Homegrown organic vegetables such as silverbeet, carrots, kale, and beetroot.
- Quality bones that are sourced from farms that produce human-grade quality meats. Brisket bones, marrow bones, necks, feet, whole fish sardines, carcasses etc. By feeding our dogs and puppies bones, their teeth stay clean, their lives are enriched, they get their daily calcium requirements and they have fresh breath.
- Bone broth and meat stock – most days we have a pot of bone broth or meat stock gently simmering on the stove. Our dogs and puppies enjoy the health benefits of broth, including stronger immunity, a collagen boost, joint health, healthy sleep and digestion.
- We never feed our dogs ‘dog-grade food’. The dog food industry is unregulated dog foods contain meat and meat by-products that are deemed dead, diseased, disabled or dying. Consequently, it can be full of drugs such as anti-inflammatories, hormones, preservatives, painkillers, bacteria and antibiotics.
By feeding our dogs and puppies a balanced, premium quality and varied diet; we have found that our dogs:
- Are never itchy, do not suffer from food allergies or tummy upsets and only ever need to go to the vet for their yearly vaccination and checkup.
- They have shiny, thick soft non-shedding coats that don’t have a doggy smell.
- They have clean teeth and their breath doesn’t smell.
- Minimal vet bills because our dogs and puppies have strong immune systems, healthy digestion and improved wellness.
- Less waste in their diet, means our dogs and puppies produce less waste, they poop less!

Puppy training – a focus on developing life skills
Ethical breeders impliment a puppy-raising program that focusses on developing life skills in their puppies, including:
- confidence
- optimism
- calmness
- tolerance to frustration
- focus
- boundary training (puppy goes to bed on cue and relaxes)
- grit and determination
- independence
- foundations of loose leash walking
- crate training
- toilet training (commences at 3 weeks of age)
- car travel
- sound exposure to fireworks, thunderstorms, babies crying, large crowds etc.
Our puppies enjoy short daily training sessions from 5 weeks of age. Once they are motivated by food we can start shaping behaviours such as sitting for attention, hopping on a boundary (the training foundations of going to their bed when asked) and luring them through obstacles to grow their confidence and optimism.
We start to positively condition our pups to crates and eventually, they work up to spending some supervised time in a crate next to us (chewing on long-lasting tasty chews) while we tick things off our to do list.
These training sessions grow a puppy’s calmness and independence, preventing behaviour problems such as separation anxiety later in life.

Health testing in Oodles explained
Our breeding mums and stud dogs are health-tested for breed-specific hereditary diseases. Our health testing includes regular yearly vet health checks, DNA testing and hip scoring.
PennHIP Testing (Hip Scoring) to prevent Hip Dysplasia
Our stud dogs have been either PennHIP scored (Studs post 2021 – PennHIP is our current choice for hip scoring due to its higher accuracy in picking up hip dysplasia as it measures the degree of laxity in the hip joints) or OFA (our stud dogs tested before 2021), scoring better than their breed average for hip soundness.
We hip-score our stud dogs to ensure that we are reducing the likelihood that our puppies will go on to develop the crippling orthopaedic condition known as hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a condition that is known to affect many Oodle breeds including Cavoodles, Labradoodles, Spoodles, Bernedoodles, Bordoodles, Sheepadoodles and Groodles.
What should a Puppy Health Check include?
Oodle puppies should undergo a thorough vet check with a reproduction specialist vet.
Oodle puppies should be checked for abnormalities of the:
- Eyes
- Ears
- Gums
- Teeth (Bite)
- Heart
- Lungs
- Joints (loose Patellas/knees)
- Lymph nodes
- Coat quality
- Testicles in male puppies
- Checked for hernias
Ethical breeders will share the health test results of their breeding dogs. You should read over these results before commiting to purchasing a puppy. You should also receive copies of the parent’s health test results including DNA testing and hip scores in your puppy pack.
Inspect the environment where your puppy has been raised
Reputable breeders are usually proud of their puppy raising program and willing to allow puppy buyers to see how their puppies are raised. Meet the parent dogs of the puppy you’re considering buying. Sometimes, the breeder will use an outside stud dog, in which case they will have video showing the temperament of the stud dog.
Always meet the mother of your puppy, many unethical breeders don’t allow this and it’s a major red flag. Check the parent dogs temperaments and overall health and wellbeing.
Puppy Packs
Puppy packs help with a smooth transition
Ethical Oodle breeders ensure their puppies for sale go home with a puppy starter pack:
- Homemade food to settle your puppy in for the first 2-3 days.
- Comprehensive information on care, training, grooming, feeding, socialisation etc.
- Soft bed
- Cosy blanket with smells from home including mum and siblings (this is really important and helpful for a smooth transition)
- Harness, collar and leash
- Soft toy
- Health test results for the parents of your puppy including DNA testing for both parents and hip scores if completed
- Introductory free Pet Insurance (for 8 week old puppies, not available with puppies older than 9 weeks of age)
- Ongoing support for the life of your puppy. Talk to your breeder and gauge how passionate they are about the dogs they breed. If they appear disinterested in discussing their breeding program, they are unlikely to be enthusiastic about providing support for the life of the dog.

Guardian Homes Enable Ethical Breeding Practices
Guardian homes help support ethical breeders
Here at Raggy Dogs, we don’t believe in keeping dogs in kennels. Our dogs are part of our family and live as such.
Our three oodle stud dogs live with us in our home and in the past when we’ve had female dogs, they were placed in loving guardian homes where they received the love, care and training they deserve and need.
Ethical breeders tend to have a maximum of 3-4 litters from their breeding females, spread over 4-5 years or so. This allows the dogs to have time to enjoy life outside of being a mum. The maximum number of naturally birthed litters a female dog can have in NSW is 5 according to state dog breeding legislation from December 2025.
FAQs - Puppies
We occassionally have a carefully planned litter once every 2-3 years. We don’t decide to have a litter of puppies lightly as it is a full-time commitment for 2-3 months where we are cleaning, feeding, socialising, training, grooming and enjoying the puppies, their mumma and our 3 other dogs. We usually only breed if we have a carefully planned breeding that we want to keep a puppy from. And so, understandably, some years we don’t have any puppies. We sometimes know of other family breeders in our community who have quality pups available and are happy to forward suitable enquiries.
All of our breeding dogs are DNA-tested for hereditary diseases associated with their respective breeds. Our stud dogs have been DNA tested clear of these common genetic diseases:
- Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)
- Neonatal Encephalopathy with Seizures (NeWS)
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (prcd)
- von Willebrand’s Disease Type 1 (vWD1)
Our stud dogs have also been hip-scored with better-than-breed average results.
For a non-shedding, teddy bear-coated Cavoodle or Groodle the cost is $4000-$5000.
Our puppies are not the cheapest and here’s why:
- We are experienced breeders, having been involved in breeding for more than 30 years.
- We health test our breeding dogs (Testing includes DNA testing and hip scoring for studs).
- All of our puppies come with a 12-month health guarantee.
- Lifetime support.
- Rehoming if required.
- Our dogs are fed a human-grade diet of organic vegetables and a variety of proteins.
- We are ethical dog breeders who are proud to have a functioning guardian home program. This means all of our breedings dogs are first are foremost family pets. We are not a large breeding facility or puppy farm and we welcome visitors to our home when we have puppies.

Guardian homes are an important part of our small breeding program. They allow us to breed dogs to an ethical standard that we are proud of. Therefore, we always welcome guardian home enquiries. While we don’t always have puppies or adult dogs looking for a guardian home, we always accept applications. Once your application is accepted, we will keep you updated with any puppies or dogs that become available in our guardian home program.
Yes, our puppies are non-shedding. We DNA test our breeding dogs for coat traits including shedding, furnishing genes, fleece and curly coat traits. Therefore, we understand the coat traits our dogs carry in their DNA and the types of coats they produce in their puppies.
We have bred puppies in a range of coat colours including:
- Chocolate Merle
- Blue Merle
- Phantom
- Chocolate
- Ruby Red
- Cream
- Red
- Black
- Parti colour
And combinations of these colours. We don’t focus primarily on colour in our breeding program. Our focus is first and foremost health, temperament and conformation.
Our toy cavoodles weigh between 3 and 6.5kg. Around 28cm to the top of the shoulder.
Our mini groodles weigh between 9 and 15kg. Around 38cm to the top of the shoulder.
Our multigenerational Raggy Dogs weigh between 8 and 14kg. Around 35cm to the top of the shoulder.
